I haven't experienced the SFO experiment, but which lane is closer to the BP reader? I found that when using one of these lanes at a NW gate in PDX, the elite lane was the furthest away from it. When I went to the front of the elite lane and there were about 10-15 people in the regular lane (I had missed pre-boarding), I remember it feeling awkward to reach across the full line to give them my BP - I actually waited until 1 or 2 people went by first so as not to appear too rude about it. Still a huge improvement for the times you have missed the preboarding..
The few times I flew through SFO last year, the gate agent actually said "Excuse me one moment" to the passengers waiting in the normal lane before taking my BP. That's the best way to handle it imho.
