1) You're required to fly the contracted route, unless there's a delay in the flight your booked on, in which case all bets are off. The good news is you can now keep the frequent flyer points. Once upon a time, that was a no-no.

Amazingly, the booking travel agent said that crazy routing is the same fare as ICN-ATL-SAT. With the Gold Elite bonus, this trip ought to get me about 36k miles, and the SAT-SFO trip will get me another 12k.
