It should decrease the likelihood of your bag being put on the wrong first flight. But, PPBM doesn't preclude the airline from forgetting to put your bag on the plane and leaving it at the airport.

Also, if the bag must travel without you for some reason, they're required to examine it (e.g. x-ray) to make sure it's safe.
