Preferred boarding is a privilege of Gold status which AA promises in writing. That AAgent took away your privilege. I'd certainly write to AA.

Normally when an AAgent tries to deny preferred boarding to elites, I try to privately politely mention to him/her that elite boarding is a written documented privilege. In many cases AAgent will relent by doing the boarding correctly. Of course I understand when the flight is boarding late and they try to board everyone at one. But we need to promptly complain every time an AAgent takes away one of the guaranteed elite privileges.
