The bigger question is why would you want to get rid of an older AT&T plan as they typically have better rates and options than Cingular.
This older plan was a regional one that is geographically limited to the SF Bay Area. Higher charges for use anywhere outside. It didn't make sense to continue in that fashion. Adding a line to an existing plan and making that a family plan saves money besides allowing sharing the rollover mins and nationwide area.
