As everyone else has said you do NOT have to buy a phone from Cingular to activate a second line. Just yesterday I called and added a 4th line to my Family Plan using my own phone. They do charge an activation fee and postage to send you a new sim card, about $30.

The bigger question is why would you want to get rid of an older AT&T plan as they typically have better rates and options than Cingular.
