As you should know, all airplanes have a MTOW and a Maximum landing weight. They use the gear down approach to create more wind resistance to make the engines work harder to be able to burn off more fuel and lower the plane's weight to below the Maximum landing weight for landing.
You misunderstood the question. I understand why they lowered the gear; what I don't understand is why they had to. Under what conditions would a plane arrive with too much fuel?
