This is not true.

About 3 weeks ago I activated an account with Cingular and used my own quad-band phone. They never insisted that I purchase a phone from them, and because I brought my own phone with then, I didn't need to sign a 2 year contract.

Go to a corporate store, not a reseller, and they will be very accomodating.
