When you are protected on a later flight, it means an agent has booked you space on a later flight, without cancelling the space you are holding on the current flight.

Not having worked at the airport, I'm not sure what goes into the decisionmaking process with regards to removing that protected flight... but I can see where feasibly it may be taken away to give to someone who no longer has a "current flight" that still might fly.
