Why such a small seat pitch on an Airbus A321

Just a trivia question for those more experienced in BA's fleet than I. Today I took an Airbus A321 returning from BRU to LHR. The curtain was between rows 10 and 11. I was sitting in the first non-CE row in 11C (the row that's reserved for Golds and has no B seat). On this trip, there were seven rows of CE seats, followed by 3 more rows before the curtain; rows 8-10 were further back because of a large space to accommodate the emergency exit row - with enough room for another row of seats right where the door should be - that's how big it seemed, and with one of the crew (jump) seats in 8D.

However, the question I'm getting around to is that 11C had almost no legroom compared to the seat pitch on just about all other flights I've been flying round Europe with BA. It was hard enough to even use my laptop - it was that tight when I compare to other flights. Was it just that this was my first A321, and in this configuration jams more seats into a smaller aircraft than others because of the large amount of room needed for the exit row between 7 and 8 - or is there a reason why 11C was so small on this aircraft?
