It's happened to me on my last 3 744 flights with NZ. Admittedly, I don't travel anywhere near as much as
Kiwi Flyer
.
In all three cases (MEL-AKL, AKL-MEL, and LAX-LHR) the people were American couples bringing a 22" rollaboard on each, and exhausting the overhead space in PE. In business I don't think it's as much an issue because there is much a better seat:locker ratio.
I was a little bit miffed to be boarding to the exit row in PE earlier this month to have 3 people infront of me stuff rollaboards into the overheads, leaving me with nowhere to put my two (modestly sized) laptop bags - until an FA noticed the lockers wouldn't actually close with the rollaboards in them and removed them.
I've seen quite a few rollaboards have to go into the upstairs closet, and on one flight that closet became too full and the bags had to go downstairs - the FAs indicated this isn't uncommon, since apparently during the refit the upstairs closet shrunk in length resulting in much less space.
YMMV, of course.
