I have never had a shortage of carry on space on an intl NZ flight. Part of the reason IMO, is that most people are checking a bag, going a long distance for more than a few days so have more stuff to take. I would hazard a guess that I am in the minority travelling LAX/SFO-AKL return with only carry on.
Count me in that minority. I can count on one hand the number of NZ flights where I've had to put carry on in the closet due to lack of room overhead.
