I know security is going to be a circus. "I'm going to beep." "You have to take that brace off." "You can't have those crutches." etc etc etc.

My briefcase is a backpack. I can check my roller bag - my spouse can wheel it in for me, and a coworker can claim it for me. Reverse on the way home. Or should I just have 'em wheelchair me?

Am I nuts to think I can do this?

First of all, I feel your pain. I've blown out my legs plenty of times. I've done travel both ways you are talking about plus other ways; however I gotta say the older (36) I get the more I'm inclined to use the chair. Security with crutches and brace is same as chair and brace, you're gonna get the wand and the hand pat down no matter which way you do it but with the chair you go to the front of the line and unpacking and going through security yourself on crutches is a major PITA. The backpack can make you unstable plus any wet spots on floor can make you slip and cause more damage. If you have a co-worker travelling with you then that is a different story, they can carry everything for you if you want; however I guess I'd still take the chair, that's what it is there for. But yes, you can do it on crutches, just not the safest or most sensible way to do things IMHO. I know being in chair can make you look a little funny or feel funny, but you are hurt so suck it up and use the chair is my opinion. You can use the crutches to board and de-plane, just the chair in the long walks and such.

Good Luck, get better soon.
