Costco S. Africa Trip - A good value?
Costco is offering their members a 10 day trip to South Africa for $6,300 per person includes the following: (May 9 - May 19)
All airfare (to and from US and within Africa)
All ground transportation
All sightseeing fees
Most meals
Accomodations
There are 4 nights at the Twleve Apostles, the Rovos Rail between Cape Town to Pretoria, one night at the Michelangelo in Johannesburg, and 3 nights at the Sabi Sabi Selati Lodge.
Based on current pricing, I can only get the total to add up to $7,550 for air, rail and hotel, so I can't imagine food, ground transport and tourism fees are $5,000.
If I am somewhat adventurous, how easy and expensive is it to arrange my own tours and safaris when in Africa, and should I try to compile my own trip rather than getting a pre-packaged tour? My wife and I don't necessarily like the tour concept anyways, so with proper planning do you think I can save a few thousand by planning out our own trip?
Also, I have heard mixed reviews about the Rovos Rail trip, and I was wondering if I am better off saving the few days and instead spending adding a side trip to Victoria Falls.
Finally, if I make my own trip, what is the best time (or alternatively months to avoid)?
Any comments or thoughts are welcomed. Thanks!
