From a business perspective, I look at McDonalds as being very successful in standardizing a product and process and being able to export it around the world. Not as easy as it sounds. I try to check out a local McDonalds in all the countries I visit just as a lark.
It's kind of interesting to see the different menu items. I've found many similar items called different names or versions in different sizes. The only unique items that pop into my head right now are the Croquette in Amsterdam and a green curry burger in Hong Kong.
And I've got to agree with 3timesalady, McDonalds is usually a good bet if you're in need of a free and clean washroom.
