Both my international and Hawaii upgrade awards have always been one way. I use two for a round trip and sometimes upgrade only one way. About a year ago, I had an upgrade from EWR to BRS outbound and returned coach. IIRC. I had the upgrade miles initially deduced from my account then redeposited when the upgrade did not materialize.
