Report coming out today say that the hotel has been operating illegally since it opened in 2000. They never obtained a certificate of occupancy (they had a temporary 30 day one, but never a long term one). It is a Key West ordinance and a Florida law that a hotel have one.
Also, the fire marshall is saying the boiler suspected of causing the problem had never been inspected.
The county State Attorney's office said something to the affect that it is troubling that people were hurt and killed because the building was not in compliance. You know what that means - a massive lawsuit is coming up. Only caught a part of it on the radio, but an employee (manager, general manager, that is the part I missed) has been suspended until further notice and until the investigation is complete.
Prediction - this place will not be opening again for many months.
