It's certainly not just a BA thing. Flexibilty increases the risk of empty seats and overbooking for the airline so non-flexible tickets are cheaper to reflect the reduced risk. Unfortunately, on this occasion you have lost out.
AndyFlyer isn't this more commercially minded as it ensures that customers who need flexibility pay for it whilst increasing demand from those who are on a fixed itinery by reduing prices?
