Don't go to the Old Terminal, there is nothing to eat there either besides expensive gruel.
If your friend has a car, have them meet you at arrivals, and go to a local restaurant.
There isn't much to choose from in the Romulus (eeeeew! ghetto!) area.
Your best bets are "Leonardos" and the "Merriman Grill" on Merriman (directly north of Metro and I94 on Merriman). There is also a Denny's on Middlebelt, which is the border road on Metro's east side.
I actually just ate at Leonardo's tonight. I had vitello ossobuco and lots of wine for around $32 with tip (hic!).
Romulus isn't pretty. It's amazing how Detroit is one of few airports that is not surrounded by commercial businesses and HQs.
