No problems in Germany and France last fall, using a US issued Amex and a Puerto Rican BBV Visa. In France a few retailers were leery using my BBV visa, since BBV is a Spanish bank, but when I explaines it's a US/PR card, they changed their mind.

I don't have anything planned for Europe until June at the moment, but I'll check then
