While I've never quite understood the rational behind the $25 standby fee - other than "revenue enhancement", that is - the above is absurd. If a passenger chooses to take their chances on an earlier flight by just going to the gate and hoping for an empty seat, there should be no fee charged.
It was put into place, in part due to there being more and more persons purchasing tickets for a red-eye flight and then showing up midday at peak times hoping to get on the more expensive mid-day flight. Rather than charging the $100 change fee plus any fare differences, the company put in the same day move up program.
