It probably will - I've stayed in some very pleasant BW's that almost had a "Bed & Breakfast" feel to them in small towns.
The downside is that you'll have to do a lot of research, as there are some bad properties out there. The cookie-cutterness of HGI or HI works in your favor if you don't know how far you are going to drive in a given day and will end up booking a random property over the phone at 8PM. The uniqueness of the BW's can be nice, as long as you aren't out on the road with no way at all to read independent reviews of the properties before you book.
I've also stayed in BW's in Europe that weren't too bad.
