IIRC, when I came back from ORD I got took two carry on bags aboard, no questions ask (albeit in PE, not Y). This let me get out through immigration and customs very quick. Aircraft to shower was no more than 10 minutes (@ Radisson SAS - no shower in the lounge).

When it came to the domestic sector, I did of course have to go and check-in one of the bags. If you're having a shower it shouldn't be a problem doing it this way either.
