This policy of unloading checked bags to reduce weight is, unfortunately, a SOP.

I experience it once or twice a year even though I don't check bags most of the time. It makes commercial sense as it is better to delay bags than to offload passengers. The bags are just delayed, not lost. They show up anywhere from a few hours later to a few days later. There is, unfortunately, not much you could do to speed it up.
