It's my understanding Qantas selected the Rockwell Collins Total Entertainment System (TES™). Sometime ago QF commenced upgrading the system and introduced AVOD. Panasonic will be the IFE supplier for the Qantas A380s, and IIRC, the 787s.

Well, unless we are informed from Qantas directly, we can only speculate as to why the system is faulty.

I think you will find the aircraft that are getting AVOD now, or have just got it (like Wunala Dreaming), will have a system that is much more reliable and efficient - QF has had the opportunity to test AVOD on aircraft like VH-OJS (one of the first to get it) and fix any errors or problems with patches and upgrades along the way.

It was interesting to note that not long after the onboard luggage restrictions were implemented in 2006, Qantas carried IFE engineers aboard flights to the UK/US and Germany in the hope that if the system was to fault, someone could fix it, and passengers would not be left with nothing to do! (remembering they would have no handheld games etc)

I sympathise with the Flight Attendants who have their work cut out constantly trying to fix the problems and constantly having to apologise.

I am yet to experience a major AVOD failure or loss of IFE. I have flown on a number of 744 and 333 aircraft and the system has worked flawlessly or at the worst, been sluggish, but still fully available.
