I'm in Bali, diving. One of my bags weighed in at 24kgs, the other at 25kgs. Come 13 Feb, I would be expected to shift 3kgs to another bag. Where this bag is to come from, I know not. Presumably, I'm expected to purchase one, perhaps BA (with its tie up with Samsonite) will have a little concession stall next to check-in selling bags or perhaps BA expects me to carry a third bag folded up. Who knows?
But the reality is that come the change, premium pax will have to face the ignominy of repacking bags on the floor of check-in. Is this going to be good for business? I doubt it. Will it lead to frayed tempers at check-in desks? You bet.
One final point that interested me. Talking to a CSD about this recently, and she told me she thought the biggest problem was the increase in the number of bags that the policy would produce. Apparently LHR is already at bursting point with the existing number of bags it handles. Anything up to a third increase in the number of bags will lead to frequent disruption of the baggage system. And we all know how well BA copes when the baggage system goes to hell, don't we.

You will be allowed diving equipment up to a weight of 45kg under the new policy - you just need to notify BA a couple of days beforehand, so any tempers at this specific scenario may be avoided.
