I frequently nest itineraries especially ex Asia and have never had a problem. I would have though that the reversal scenario is intended to cover those using cheap return tickets effectively as singles. I have done this many times typically as a combination of tickets with BA/CX, BA/QF, BA/AY etc. although I have also run BA/BA nested bookings also without difficulty.
