Your point is well taken, that people commonly underestimate real threats to their safety and obsess over very unlikely threats. However, the traffic fatality rate is actually higher in Thailand than the US (about 20 traffic-related deaths per 100,000 people vs.about 15 per 100,000 people in the US) so maybe this isn't the best example!
