You ask a great question. For me a luxury hotel is a place where the service, rooms and amenities and as polished as possible. I've been in many nice rooms where upon close inspection,looks a little rough around the edges. In bangkok, after trying a nice local hotel and the Penninsula, you could really contrast the difference. The smile from the staff, the make of the rooms and the feel of the place made it that much more of an enjoyable experience. Rooms with a view is not very important for me in my opinion.
My vote then would be Mandarin Hotel in Central, and Conrad/ShangriLa/Marriott mid levels (above pacific place)...I'm partial to HK side. I've stayed at Peninsula and would not return but POV.
