I fly LAX-IAD all the time and only get upgraded about 40% of the time as a 1K. It's a very popular route for 1K's, MM's, and GS. Your best chance is to apply a CR-1 at least a month ahead of time. That will get you the upgrade most of the time.

Your experience is exactly what I am talking about. Which is also why I am so disappointed to learn that a friend of mine who flies the same route on AA has much better luck with upgrades. As I did on both CO (ex-EWR) and US ex-LGA. Personally, I think that the UA MP program is very overcrowded and that dilutes everyone's status, which in turn makes everything more competitive, upgrades, awards, etc.
