As with everything, it depends -- in this case, what airport. If you are doing a MR through an airport like HPN (White Plains, NY), then 25-30 minutes is plenty of time, since you can walk from one end of the terminal to the other in about 45 seconds. Connecting in DTW is a very different story, as the McNamera (NW) terminal has 80 or so gates in a looooooong concourse, and getting from one end to the other could conceivably take 30min, depending on passenger traffic.
You'd also need to consider weather conditions and how likely your inbound flight is to be delayed (which cuts further into your connection time unless the outbound was also delayed).
I'd probably also factor in the complexity of the MR. If it's a simple transcon (say NYC-MSP-LAX) with lots of connecting options at the mid-point, then I might take a bigger gamble on the short connection. If it were some exotic 10-segment run (where if I were to miss a connection then I'd be screwed), then I'd be more conservative in booking.
