This is absolutely true for Star Alliance Awards, but if it is an all United metal award, you are welcome to make date and time changes after travel has begun, as long as the routing remains the same.

I'd be curious if the F seat they offered 2 hours later was 3-cabin F. There are very few SFO-IAD flights a day that are 3-cabin aircraft.

Make sure you are FFCC waitlisted for F on the same flight they put you in C for. Always a decent chance he'll still get F. (edited to reflect FFCC - not PA)

If it doesn't work out, at least know that the difference between F and C on the 763MZ is minimal at best.
