I believe that I got a letter from Delta saying that they were going to change this in 2007, leaving flyers on the upgrade list even when checking in online. (now I wish I hadn't thrown it away!).
Starting sometime in January (no exact date specified), once you have booked your flight, as a Medallion, you will not only be automatically put on the "upgrade request" list (that should already be happening with flights booked after some date in October), but if you haven't cleared before the day you are flying, you will remain on the upgrade list. You will not have to re-request an upgrade at a kiosk, CRC, etc. on flight day. Just checking in keeps you on the original list in the same hierarchy, and that includes online check-in.
