I agree -- upgrades to FC and the mileage bonus is the main thing. There are better airlines. Then again, live in MSP and there really is no better carrier than NWA!
Also, as a PE, they do take much better care of you when things don't go according to plan. My last flight MSP-IAD was cancelled 20 min prior to boarding. I headed to the nearest WC and the re-booked me on a MSP-BWI flight and got me there on time.
After spending 6 years in MSP, I am sticking with NW even when there are other airlines which are "better" and more convenient. After making GE, I am starting to enjoy some of the perks and am addicted to them now.

I think higher elite level does "attract" better service. I also agree with sbagdon that it may be a WC benefit. I have a guest who has no status with NW (as he parks his miles with SQ), in the MSP WC. He was served by the WC agent and was impressed with the service he received. Now, lets hope that he will fly more skyteam metals and parks the miles with NW.
