I lived in London at the time so I flew STN - EWR many times.
I rememeber most of the pax thatboarded at STN were actually non israelis/jews who found it more convenient to fly out of STN to NYC.
As I recall, it was also the absolute cheapest way to fly from LON to NYC at the time. It was very many years ago, though.
