As much crap as Southwest has received for their policy, at least it's better than United or similar. They make purchasing two seats very difficult (and you can't use easy chicken) and no option for refund if the flight is pretty empty. With Southwest at least if the flight is empty then you get your extra money back.

That being said I've avoided the issue by traveling paid first.
