Bethune is not going to take over Delta. He has repeatedly stated that he does not intend to compete with Continental in "retirement," and since Bethune is a straight-shooter, I believe him.
Being the chief advisor to the Creditor's Committee is, of course, the perfect job for him. It was always his intent to "rationalize" the airline industry, and he can have an enormous impact in this short-term position.
I'm sure he is a man of his word but he could rationalize it in any number of ways. Who knows what in the cards for DL and CO down the road. The big dogs out there have egos to match their brains. I'm sure he would love to get back in and influence the direction of the industry at a critical juncture. And if I were a creditor, I would feel very comfortable with a guy like that running my investment. Anyway, like I said, just speculating.
