Jerry has already said he wants to leave when DL exits. My thinking is that Bethune would be a perfect successor for a standalone DL. I don't think he was ready to leave CO when he did. If he looks at DL's plan and says he can execute it, that would satisfy the creditors. He's got the obvious experience with turnarounds. It would potentially give him the opportunity to create a globe covering entity, through a merger or other means, down the road. Not sure if he is interested but he would be the perfect fit. Some of his fellow coworkers are already with DL.
Bethune is not going to take over Delta. He has repeatedly stated that he does not intend to compete with Continental in "retirement," and since Bethune is a straight-shooter, I believe him.
Being the chief advisor to the Creditor's Committee is, of course, the perfect job for him. It was always his intent to "rationalize" the airline industry, and he can have an enormous impact in this short-term position.
