Well, I'm glad to see that my impression in the OP was wrong.

The media I was referring to was the numerous AP articles I saw reprinted on cnn.com, the hourly ABC radio news stories, an NY Times story, and a story on CNN television news.

In the past, I've noticed the same thing from other news sources. But, I guess I'm selectively remembering, since others have obviously had a very different experience here!
