The advice on having your luggage tagged as standby is a good one; when I took an overnight VDB at LAX a few years ago I did this and the gate agents were happy to hear that I had my luggage tagged. It also made the wait to retrieve my bags much shorter. I was also going to waive the hotel voucher and go home and sleep, but when they offered me the Westin LAX, I decided the Heavenly Bed and Shower was a far more attractive option than my place.
