Thanks MRJ for the feedback! I only carry-on 2 pieces (or attempt to) if I am both:
(a) going on a short enough trip that doesn't necessitate my large suitcase.
(b) am traveling to a place that a lost bag would be difficult to reach me.

I am mindful of other passenger's needs and don't like to "break the rules" in general.

I have been fortunate to have never lost a bag on NW (knock on wood), so I am not one of the frustrated folks who insist on carrying-on their luggage at any cost. I also think airlines should try to enforce size restrictions more than # of pieces. I have seen some mammoth bags going down the jetway in my day! It is a difficult situation, I realize. You don't want to force passengers to use the "size guide" and have to put their pags in that little metal or plastic box, but at the same time you want to save room for everyone's belongings....not an easy dilemma...
