The photo on my previous passport was taken when I was in college and sporting a (very unadvised) full beard. Shaved it off a few months after I got the passport, but still had 9+ years to go. People would grin, I actually had an Argentine immigration inspector burst out laughing. As I said, it wasn't the wisest beard (think escaped Amish). So, a source of amusement. Then 9/11 happened. And I was in Europe at the time. And I got my wallet stolen, leaving me with just my (replaced) Amex and my passport, but no other photo ID. The airport conversation was pretty much "so, you have no other ID, you had a thick beard, and you shaved it off." Less than lovely. They eventually let me on the plane, but there was quite a bit of back and forth.
