it feels like I get upgraded about 80% of the time (both as a Gold & as a Platinum Elite member).

Then again, I usually fly the busy, really long haul trips (DTW <-> West Coast). At the beginning of the year, NWA instituted restrictions on how many seats are available for upgrading (versus paid First class, "Connect First" expensive Y class fares which are eligible for 1st Class).
