The criteria I look for in an airport are
1) Cleanliness - starting from the restrooms and then to the gate areas. New or well maintained chairs, carpets, lighting, etc
2) Adequate seating at the gates just on the off chance your flight might be delayed
3) Good signage. I like to know what is where and have arrival/departure information for all airlines.
4) No need to go groundside when transferring from one terminal to another. I hate going through security three times on one trip.
Always arriving at a jetway would be a strong contender for making this list. Nice-to-haves would be food & bars, wi-fi, power ports and the like.
Based on this list ORD gets about C+, not really ghetto level.
LAX, otoh, gets a big fat F.
Why would LAX get an F on these criteria?
It's clean.
There's mostly adequate seating (except for those satellites at the end, but the same is true for ORD).
I'll give you poor signage, but can this really drop you to an F??
No need to go groundside to transfer between 6, 7, and 8. If you have an international connection, you do have to go groundside, but again, that's true at ORD and most airports.
