As I posted in another thread, these certs can sometimes work out well.

I was looking for two seats RDU-SNA in mid June.

The fare using the cert was $558.20 or $279.10 each. I think that's a pretty good fare for a transcon in June.

The cheapest fare I could find was $447.20 each X 2 = 894.40.

So I saved $336.20 using the cert.

I upgraded both ways on the paid ticket, so I'll fly in F one way and Chapel Hill Gal in the other (or maybe we'll alternate segments).
