Some airlines do use status for bumps, esp. if you volunteer prior to the cutoff. I used to do this on DL when getting the lounge to bump me (now I've decided bumps aren't worth it, and never try for a bump). Not sure that AA ever operated this way, as I have zero bumps on AA.
