willyroo is telling an old joke told by pilots regarding the then new ETOPS.
I thought it stood for Extended Twin-engine Operations.
ETOPS is just not for overwater routes but it signifies what the rating, plane specific, is for single engine flight time (variable), allowed away from a valid diversion runway, and can be related for overland as well.
