Why is it called 1K?

I've always been confused by this. I think of 1K as a common abbreviation for one thousand. But the qualification requirements for 1K are not one thousand of anything - it's either 100 (segments) or 100,000 (miles). Why isn't it called 100K?

Anyone know the history behind this? Does 1K mean something entirely different for United?
