Once you clear customs, you will exit the customs area and you should be able to drop your bags off at a Delta counter right outside the customs area.
You will probably have to pass back thru TSA screening,but at least you won't have to carry your bags all over the terminal.

It has been awhile since I connected thru JFK on DL, but this isusually the routine in connecting to another flight after clearing customs.
