By luggage scanner you mean for checked bags or at the security check point?
1. he would not be allowed to carry it on because it could be a weapon.
2. he didn't check it in as checked bags as he was worried they would lose or damage it.
Not to say that UPS or Fedex won't either, but at least they take more care and will take more responsibility if something happens.
